A straight-up bet puts your entire chip stack on one single number. If the ball lands in that pocket the payout is thirty-five times your stake, but you lose if any other number hits, which makes it the highest-risk single wager on the wheel.

A split covers two adjacent numbers on the layout by placing your chip on the line between them. If either number wins you get paid seventeen to one, effectively halving your risk compared to a straight-up wager while still targeting specific pockets.
